JUNE LAKES REPORT

Hello Trout members,

The weather in June as in previous years continues to confuse. Starting out very hot then becoming changeable with windy conditions – that completes the weather forecast. I have heard this so many times over the years that you just have to take one day at a time, so planning your fishing day out is always a bit of a lottery. I guess that’s half the fun of it though, we all enjoy our sport whatever the conditions.

Our work parties this month have concentrated on WZ because the weed has shown so much growth. As fast as we remove it, it grows back. Sometimes with varying rates and different species. The lake’s ecology continues to surprise and amaze us. As long as it remains healthy for our rainbows, that is what drives us to cut, pull, cart, and dump the dreaded weed to all parts of the lake margin. It's always a good workout so you are welcome to join our work party volunteers anytime! Let me know by email if you are available and I will include you on the next available work party listing.

Some of your reports for the month are as follows.

·        2 to return from WZ, one 3 one 4. No sign of the real beast today but I got one of his near double figure friends to eat a black foam beetle dry at about a rod length away which was pretty exiting as it goes.  Sadly the weed did it’s business on that one after about 5 minutes despite my best efforts to nurse it back through the maze.

·        X1 Rainbow 2 1/4lb. Caught on Pink/Orange nymph slow retrieve

X1 Blue 1 3/4lb. Caught on White nymph fast retrieve

Both from Cowleaze.

·        2 to return at WZ, a 4 and a nearly 5. Lake seemed quite empty to a degree but I was thrilled to get one on a transparent buzzer that I tied. The other fell to the black foam beetle, I was once again in search of the big one in the very same corner, I got a rise out of him on the third presentation and lifted early, devastated!

·        Chapmans 5.25lb and 7.5lb both Rainbows.

Caught along bottom, slow retrieve with olive nymph

·        2 Fish.   4 ¾ and 3 ½

Both caught in the shade on ht4e fishing hut side. Gold ribbed hares ear spider and indicator. Not so deep though – about 2 feet down.

Very breezy – difficult casting for a left hander.

·        Fished today with two nice fish 3-4lbs one out of Chapmans and the other out of Cowleaze but blanked on Viners yet again.

Chapmans cloudy but relatively weed free and the grass cut today leaving only the bank side Cow parsley number one enemy. Cowleaze weedy but plenty of fish showing in the clear areas. Viners cloudy but relatively weed free. Water levels generally good.

When you send me your catch returns if you feel like it, don’t forget to describe your day and if possible what flies you have used. I think it really helps us all in gathering information about what we believe is the best choice of fly in such conditions. Although in reality that is what we all love to argue about!

Tight Lines and don’t forget your 6Ib + leaders!

Best wishes

Paul.
