JUNE LAKES REPORT
June appears to be the time of the year when nature goes wild and the growing rate of anything green seems to get out of control. Grass, bushes, trees and the weed in our lakes and rivers continue to move on a pace and fishing becomes more difficult. Whilst the volunteers within the Club are keeping the banks, and the surrounds, of our trout lakes in excellent condition, nature takes it's own course within the lakes themselves. In other words the fishing can become challenging as the summer goes on. Long hours of daylight and high nutrition levels in the water will encourage weed growth. So be prepared for some challenging fishing conditions.
Both Winterborne Zelston and the Rawlsbury complex were stocked with trout during week beginning 17th June.
As this is written the Winterborne is still flowing and is helping to keep the water in the lake fresh. Despite what seems like a wet summer so far, the rainfall figures for 2019 show a fairly average amount of rain during the first six months of the year.
The weed in the lake is at present manageable, but floating lines and top of the water fishing may be the way to go. Anglers will have to tempt the fish up from the safety of the weed lower in the water.
We have the usual family of swans and of Canada geese on the lake. And despite the fast growing grass and nettles, our volunteers have done some excellent work in keeping the banks mown and easy to walk. A wooden weed boom has been put into position in front of the outlet in order to keep it weed free.
Included in the June restocking of the Rawlsbury complex, Viners received a top up quantity of brown trout. Please take the time to walk up the hill and to try some catch and release on this lovely lake. (Barbless hooks only).
As you walk around the complex you will notice a great deal of work has been done this season to improve access and to make the fishing somewhat easier. Viners has had a number of swims strimmed and cleared. The decking on the two jetties has been replaced. And some of trees and bushes have been pruned.
On Cowleaze the dam bank and the adjacent bank have been mechanically cleared by the farm manager to remove the reed mace and small trees that used to obstruct casting.
On Chapmans the dam bank and the downward slope of the dam bank have been mown and cleared, as well as many swims. So access to the water is excellent. Again, the farm manager has done much work, including some silt removal in the entrance to Chapmans.
As always I must thank our team of volunteers for all their efforts. Despite having to contend with some wet and windy weather of late.
The Stour above and below Julian's Bridge continues to provide Club members with an excellent venue to do some river fly fishing. As well as trout there is a good head of grayling in the river and catching chub on a fly is always test of skill. A couple of hours on a summer evening fishing the river comes well recommended.
The main theme of this month's lake report is about the changing conditions on all of the Club's waters. Summer presents a challenge for fly fishing and a change fishing style is often needed.
Enjoy your fishing.
