JULY LAKES REPORT

Hello fellow Trout anglers,

Our main efforts this month have concentrated on weed clearance. It’s a bit of a never ending story like painting Sydney bridge but we are winning I think!

The work parties at Rawlsbury first dealt with ensuring that Chapmans in part is fishable and a small contingent made a lot of progress with Cowleaze. (See Photo). For the moment this does give us a breathing space and I do urge you all to enjoy these lakes whist they are relatively clear. Conditions are difficult but the trout are there in numbers.

Both the catch and release lakes are worth considering although Sandys levels are beginning to drop.

The catch returns this month were much reduced compared to June. Winternorne Zelston in particular, has not been fished to any great extent and yet there are some very large specimen fish still in there. I will also mention that a 5Ib Brownie was caught there only yesterday!

Just a few of your comments from your email returns are as follows:

Four fish ticket today.

Four fish from Chapmans.

4.5,5,5,6lb two on a damsel,

And two on an epoxy orange spot shrimp.

Very aggressive takes on the shrimp. Great day thank you.

Interesting start to the day at Rawlsbury, cloudy sky with moderate SW wind not a single fish breaking the surface for the first hour. Then at around 11am there was the odd rise. Gareth and myself tried various flies and eventually moved around to the south bank of Chapmans, within a short time Gareth managed to temp a Three and Half pound rainbow on a very lightly dressed Copper John. I went back to the south bank following our break for lunch and despite the fact the louds had given way to a bright sunny afternoon I caught a very nice fin perfect four and a half pound rainbow on a PTN variant. Thank you for the new decking on the first platform but I'm afraid I just couldn't manage to balance on the second platform, maybe we need a few more sticks.

It's that time of year where everything appears to be slowing down but I did catch two fish both on green buzzers from Chapmans weighing 3lb 14oz and 3lb 8oz.

I also tried Sandys catching one and losing one on a Pheasant Tail Nymph.

All in all a very enjoyable summer evening! Thank you for all your hard work!

It's great to hear your fishing stories please keep sending them in with your catch returns.

Take care everyone and enjoy your fishing in August.

Best wishes,

Paul.
