AUGUST LAKES REPORT

Hello Trout people,

There is no doubt that August is a difficult month for fishing our lakes. In previous years WZ has seen a huge drop in water levels, yet this year because of the increased rainfall the levels have remained relatively high. Weed clearance as usual has concentrated the mind and we have managed in the most part to keep the growth at bay. Obviously as we look to September we all hope that it will dissipate and nature will take its course and let us all have more space to fish.

Rawlsbury on the other hand has been far more difficult to deal with particularly on Chapmans. The weed increased over the month to the point that only the middle was available to fish. Some of our members were successful but reported difficulties in landing the fish across the weed. This remains a problem until our next work party. Elsewhere we did at least clear Cowleaze after quite a sustained effort.

At this point I realise that you all must feel like I am obsessing yet again about weed. It’s true it’s a sad fact that it does prey on my mind quite a lot. You might also be interested to know that there are others in the club who lie awake at night thinking of different ways to get rid of the stuff! Such are the ways of the merry fisherman…

What follows are a few of your remarks made to me in your catch returns during the month.

WZ. Fished this morning, 3.5 lb & 4.3lb, all on size 12 olive buzzer. Tip of the week, watch the swallows! Where they congregate, the buzzers are hatching! Tight Lines all.

Trying small buzzers and shrimps. Mostly they took no interest, but I made a mistake and took a size 16 shrimp on the drop. Very difficult day.

WZ. What a morning! Decided to start early (07.30) nice & cool! Stalked the margins on the bank just past the hut, fish feeding close in, on olives or buzzers, anyway, a leaded size 12 phes/ buzzer, took my two and watched them take & turn. Both fish over 3lb. it gets no better!! Drank my coke, watched the birds, and back home by 11. Ho Hum, somebody has to do it!

Lovely fish from Zelston on Friday. 4lb 11oz  2lb 9oz.very windy, back on the blue flash damsel. Surprised by decent water level, less weed than I was expecting. Great eating fish.

Had a wet and breezy morning session at WZ. After a slow start and difficult conditions, managed to take two hard fighting fish of 4lb 8 and 4lb 2 oz. Both taken on size 12 blood worm.

Great evening’s fishing at W. Zelston. The lake is looking fantastic with only occasional weed snags. 2 and a half hours brought only one to the net, but what a fish; 4 lbs 12 ozs.

A few knocks but couldn’t hook anything else. I caught on a gold humongous.

Great fun and really peaceful fishing into sunset!

And finally, a huge congratulation goes to two of our members Mike and Leo who both caught rainbows weighing over 9Ib. The photo is of Mike looking rather pleased

It's great to hear your fishing stories. Please keep sending them in with your catch returns.

Take care everyone.

Best wishes,

Paul.
