AUGUST 2nd ed.

Dear Fellow Trout Anglers

A quick mid summer update, in no particular order

We’re all aware of the dangers of Covid-19 now and in this heat also the need to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water, but let’s not forget some of our more traditional dangers. We now have two wasps nests at Zelston, but the wasps shouldn’t bother you if you leave them alone. We also have a report of a member picking up a couple of ticks up at Rawlsbury so please be careful, especially if in the longer grass and wearing shorts rather than long trousers. Ticks can carry Lymes disease which can have serious consequences, even for the fit and healthy, so please be aware.

On the second Tuesday of each month we try and do some work up at Rawlsbury, including weed clearing and removal. This can make the water coloured with disturbed silt, which often seems to attract the fish and get them on the feed, but is detrimental to sight fishing until the colour drops out over the next day or two, so you might wish to build that into your fishing plans.

The water level at Winterbourne Zelston is now dropping rapidly, though there are still open areas to fish and trout to be seen, though I suspect in a couple of weeks it will become especially difficult, so those that have the £30 end of season special ticket might like to take full advantage now. The trout that remain are the cleverest, wiliest and most wary fish so they are a great challenge, having seen a vast number of flies and anglers. But they are an admirable quarry and in superb condition. At least two anglers are on their second £30 ticket. This end of season special ticket will remain valid all through the summer, until the first restocking in the autumn (when the autumn rains refill the aquifer and the lake), which I will notify to members as usual. At that point the £30 ticket will cease to be valid and we will revert to normal day ticketing.

And finally, some great recent reports of the fishing at Rawlsbury. When we restock we aim at an average size (at the last restocking it was 3lb 12oz, the stocking before was average over 4lb) but with a spread of sizes. The first fish that went into Chapmans last time was estimated by the Chairman and me at around 7lb, with other cracking fish too. So when I received a report a few days ago of a magnificent trout having been caught in Chapmans of 6lb 10oz I was thrilled. Then, only a couple of days later, another regular angler weighed in with a three fish bag from Chapmans weighing in total over 18.5 lb, with the biggest trout pushing the scales just over 7lb and the smallest still over 5lb and having given the angler line burn on his finger before emptying 50 yards of line off the reel. Congratulations to both anglers - excellent fishing!

Best wishes and tight lines
