APRIL LAKES REPORT

Hello fellow game fishers,

A very dry April and good weather has given us all a chance to venture out and enjoy a day’s fishing in the spring sunshine. All the lakes are in pristine condition and fishing very well.

The clarity of water in Chapmans lake at Rawlsbury is perhaps the best I have seen it at this time of year. This makes it particularly attractive to those wanting to sight fish as we have just stocked with Blues.  At Winterbourne Zelston the lack of run off from the surrounding field and the underground springs continue to make this lake in my mind a spectacular water for catching hard fighting rainbows.

Some of your reports for the month are recounted below and a big thank you to those who send them in.

  • I took one Rainbow from Chapmans but most of my time was spent on the catch and release lakes where I found most action on Viners. I had 4 fish from there including two brownies of around 3lbs each. I had one rainbow from Sandy and a frustrating time on there as the clarity enabled me to see how many follows I was actually getting.
  • We had a great few hours fishing. The weather was very cold with a North wind but some very bright spells (also a short hail storm)! There were some small flies coming off, (like small grey dusters), each time the wind dropped off. So I tried some small naturals for an hour or so with no takes. The sun came out bright so I changed to a bright orange sparkle mini lure ( bright sun, bright lure, I believe), got a fish on the third cast, (down deep, sink & draw). Then went back on natural (hot head Diawl Bach) as it would be too easy to catch my second! But once I got cold & hungry, I put on an orange Montana, and once again caught third cast!  Had some lunch at the lodge, then up to Viners but it was blowing a hooley and had a hail storm so we packed up.A very enjoyable time, thanks.
  • Spent the last 2 hours of daylight at WZ and was not disappointed. A brace of beautiful rainbows who despite their weight put up a real battle! One at 3 lbs 7 ozs, the other just 2 ounces shy of 10 lbs. It took nearly 20 minutes to bring this monster to the net on 6 lbs Fluorocarbon tippet. Great fun.
  • Had a 7 am start at WZ this morning. -3 degrees. Misty start , like a mill pond . After 20 minutes I had caught my 2 fish and back home for 8.30 am. Both first cast fish. One at 4lb 6 , the other 3lb 3oz. Both caught on Blue Damsel.
  • He caught two from Cowleaze, both ‘Blues’, 2lb and 2 1/2lb  making a very happy 10 year old!!

Although obviously just stocked, they were surprisingly tricky to catch, partly due to his inexperience, however watching them, they seemed keen to follow but not take. Eventually succumbed to a natural small fly pattern.

What a great photo!

Lastly, the best fish of the season has just been taken at WZ at 11Ib 10oz. Harry is clearly a very happy man.
