By Brian Heap, Club President

Graham Pipet

On Monday 10th of February, I was told our former Secretary, Chairman and Vice President Graham Pipet had passed away, his funeral service is to be held at the Corfe Mullen Baptist Church at 11am on Thursday 6th March. Family have invited those who knew Graham to join them to reflect on his life.

Graham was, to those who knew him, a true Gentleman, just a really nice bloke and one who loved his fishing which seemed to occupy much of his time.  He joined the Club’s committee in September 1993 and became Secretary in April 1995 serving until 2004 when he took over the role of Club Chairman for a year before being appointed as a Vice President. A few years ago, suffering declining health, he could no longer fish and in a move, so typical of Graham doing the right thing, he stepped down from his role in the Club.

The Corfe Mullen Baptist Church is sometimes called the Chapel in the Valley. Newtown Lane, which serves the Church has a turning about 100 metres further west than the Royal British Legion and on the opposite side of the Blandford Road.  Refreshments will follow the service.

If you intend to attend the funeral it would be helpful if you can email the Club’s Secretary so the numbers can be forwarded to those dealing with the arrangements by no later than the 27 February 2025.

February 2025

The Annual General Meeting and the Game Section Meeting of the Wimborne and District Angling Club 2025

In accordance with the Club’s Constitution, at rule 9c, notice is given of the intention to hold the Club’s Annual General Meeting at the Royal British Legion Corfe Mullen, commencing at 19.30 on the 25th March 2025.

This year the Club is delighted to announce that Steve Oliver, who is the Rivers Conservation Officer of the Dorset Wildlife Trust, will provide a talk for about half an hour, about examples of river restoration work being done by the Trust and its partners on our local rivers, including how the Trust is involved in the return of beavers to Dorset.

The work by DWT is right on the cutting edge of River improvement and Steve is one of the real on the ground experts! So do come and listen.

A draft Agenda is available upon request via the Secretary, but a final version will of course be available on the evening of the meeting and electronically from about ten days before.

Do not forget that entrance to the Meeting will be by showing your membership book.

The formal part of the programme will include the elections of the President, Officers and Members to the Committee. There will also be the annual reports on financial matters, membership, and proposed forward plans.

On past performance if the meeting starts promptly at 19.30 then we will get through the formal part of the agenda by about 20.20. The element of Any Other Business including questions for the Committee is inevitably about 15 minutes. There will then be a short interlude before Steve Oliver’s talk which will commence at about 20.45.

Do come along.

Rule Change – No carp retaining slings

Following a recent incident, the Committee have been carefully considering the use of carp retaining slings and any other means of keeping coarse fish. As you know rule 5 of the General Rules of Fishing currently prohibits Keepnets except during the Club’s recognised matches. The Club’s most important assets are its fish, and it is inevitable that it is the largest fish that anglers will want to retain. This is true particularly if caught at night so that photographs can be taken of them in better light. However, the clear advice the Club has received is that fish do best if returned as soon as possible after recovering from being caught.  That advice should not come as a surprise to any Club member. With this in mind the Committee has resolved to revise the second sentence of Rule 5 to advise:

Keepnets, carp retaining slings, together with any other method for retaining fish, are not to be used on any Club water except during recognised Club matches in which respect they must be knotless and at least 2.4 metres in length (additional wording in italics)

This revision was agreed with immediate effect and therefore the Club’s bailiffs will be enforcing this amended rule following publication of this newsletter.
