River Stour – Canford

From November last year I have been spending more time on the river than ever, and as I write my thoughts return to match fishing there in years past. The fishing this winter has been generally good with roach, dace and bleak eager to feed but there have been a couple of days when I have struggled for a bite, particularly when the water has been too coloured or the temperature too low.  I have had to contend with pike, otters, dogs, cormorants, model boats, kayaks and novice rowers who come crashing into the bank.  It all makes for an interesting day!

Mike Cullen is arranging a match at Canford on the 18th of February and so I just hope the conditions are right and it proves to be a successful day.

Well done Jim and our thanks for everything you have done for the Club and the Match Section.

Sunday 3 December 2017 - Christmas Match

It was a pleasant enough day, dry with little wind but cold but some frosty nights had preceded so the fish seemed reluctant to respond to our baits.  However, several carp and were caught and these bonus fish helped fill the top spots.  Some backing weights followed, boosted by a decent perch, roach or bream but for most anglers it was a small fish day.

Result

1st M Jepson 12lb 8oz

2nd M Taylor 10lb 6oz

3rd N Saxby 8lb 12oz

4th S Mancey and P Christopher each with 8lb 4oz

A prize for the best Roach and this fish of 1lb fell to Mick Bartlett

Sunday 10 December 2017 – Club Points Match - Packhorse Lake

A bitterly cold, wet and windy day the effects of which was borne out by the result.  Fishing in such conditions is only for the dedicated match angler and all credit to those who turned out on such an awful winters day.

1st  M Taylor  5lbs

2nd N King  4lbs 4oz

3rd C Albiston  3lbs 4oz

MARCH 2018

Wednesday 14 March

River Stour at Canford

Ten members had booked in to fish the second and final match on the river for this the last day of the Season.  The river was carrying some floodwater and pushing through at a pace but still fishable. Whilst the wind was coming from the right quarter it became far too strong, gale force at times causing breaking waves on some of the more exposed stretches. Nevertheless, everyone caught fish and although the weights were down on the previous match there seemed to be interest in returning to the venue in the new Season when the River Points Matches resume in November.

1st M Bartlett  4lb 14oz (pictured)

2nd S Hitchman  3lb 13oz

3rd B Heap  3lb 9oz

Sunday 11 March 2018 – Todber Manor.

1st Stillwater Points

Sunday18 March – Witherington Farm -

Match cancelled due to the weather.

1st  N King 101lb

2nd C Albiston 54lb

3rd M Mancey 51lb

Jim made an early decision to cancel the match on the strength of the weather forecast of snow.

As it turned out the forecast proved to be 100% correct, it was not a good day for travel or for fishing.

Ten members had booked in to fish the first match on the river for several years and without exception expressed a desire for another before the season ends.  Match fishing on this stretch of the Stour ended as catches fell year after year until the only fish that seemed to be present were minnows but it’s all change now with good numbers of most species showing.

It was one of those days when everything seemed to be perfect, there was a light upstream wind, the sky was overcast for most of the time and the river was fining down after rain that fell a few days earlier.  There was a good pull on the water that made the fish work hard to keep their station in the flow and once hooked and sideways on to the current they gave a good account of themselves.  In most swims, the fish were slow to start feeding but as the day progressed more fish were taken and as is often the case, the last hour of the match proved to be the most productive. Whilst roach, dace and minnows were present for everyone there were also some small chub caught and perhaps the most unusual catch of the day went to Hugh Miles who landed a sea trout.

Afterwards, several opinions were put forward as to why the fishing has improved so much recently but I remain open minded on the subject, save to say whatever is happening, I just hope it continues.

A message from Jim Finch

Jim has asked me to thank everyone who turned out during January to support the points matches at Packhorse Lake.  Fishing at this time of the year can often be a challenge with only a handful of days that offer comfortable weather.  As we move into February the sun moves a little higher in the sky to signal Spring is on the way.  The days become longer and there is a feeling that he worst of the miserable weather has passed.

In the hour before the start of the match the sky was clear, the sun was up in the sky and the water looked perfect.  It was cold, a frost overnight gave that wintery feel and as the morning progressed the north wind picked up but save for a few specks of rain in the afternoon, it remained dry.

The fish seemed reluctant to feed and other than a sprinkling of large carp there were very few fish caught.

Since we last fished here, ropes had been strung across the lake to deter the cormorants.  It soon became evident that for some, these created a, ‘casting hazard’ so practice in the garden avoiding the washing line may be necessary.  Much to the amazement of everyone else, Jim decided to take his ropes down.

Sunday 5 November

Beaumont Cup – Lower Stour

Following their success last year, the Wimborne team finished overall winners of the competition.  Fished on the tidal reaches of the river, the team returned good points in their sections to retain the Cup again.  Well done!

After many years without a match on the River Stour Mike Cullen is actively trying to arrange a Sunday match on the river, this probably being staged on the Baileys section. He is contacting the University rowing club and Canford School to find the best dates and working with Jim to avoid a clash with existing matches so quite a challenge for him.

Contact Mike or Jim if you are interested in fishing.
