WELCOME TO WDAC MATCH SECTION

WDAC has a well-established and popular match section. Match attendances regularly exceed 24 entrants and it is customary to pay out 1st, 2nd and 3rd places with a silver fish payout in addition. Matches are held almost every Sunday throughout the year, with a popular evening series running Wednesday evenings 1700 - 2100 May - Aug. There is huge camaraderie with stiff competition for bragging rights. Matches are fished at both club and local commercial venues with fees, including pools, ranging from £12 to £20 dependant on location.

WDAC match secretary is Mr Jim Finch. all bookings should be made through Jim no later than the preceding Friday evening.

Jim is contactable on 01258 489400 during working hours and on 01258 453761 at all other times.

NOVEMBER 2018

Into December

The last quarter of the year and the leaves show their autumn colours before they fall and drift away on the breeze. British Summer Time has now gone along with those long warm summer evenings though we can still expect some spells of settled weather between the spells of cold winds and heavy rainfall.  As December rolls us into our winter season, the Christmas holiday is soon to follow then a new year opens bringing us new expectations and challenges.

Jim Finch

Jim is now firmly on the mend and back driving again.  Not strong enough for fishing but well on the way to a full recovery.

He is dearly looking forward to returning to repairing poles and fishing and he will soon be with us again and blessing us with gems from his knowledge and experience on just about everything.

The First Two River Matches

An interesting start to the series with two matches fished under quite different conditions.  The first match saw the river rising and carrying its first autumn floodwater.  Try as we did, we failed to catch anything larger than a few ounces so bleak and minnows were the order of the day. In the second match the river level was back to normal but there was very little flow and an east wind but it stayed dry and most had a reasonable days fishing bringing roach and dace to the scales.

OCTOBER 2018

Into October

The last quarter of the year and the leaves show their autumn colours before they fall and drift away on the breeze. British Summer Time has now gone along with those long warm summer evenings though we can still expect some spells of settled weather between the seasonal wind and rainfall.  Not my favourite month but on the plus side we can expect more rain to increase river flows and clear the swims for our winter fishing.

Jim has finally had the long awaited surgery and he is now back home and on the mend.  We all wish him a speedy recovery and provided he takes things easy he should be up and about and feeling better soon.  Hopefully after a long rest he will return to his beloved match fishing, be repairing poles and blessing us with gems from his knowledge and experience on just about everything.

NEW MATCH SCHEDULES

WDAC river match series

A series of eight river points matches are scheduled each year and these are published as ‘Match Dates’ in your membership book. The series starts in January and ends in December each year and points are allocated to each match as follows:

The winner of each match will receive 1 point, second place will be 2 points, third 3 points, fourth 4 points and fifth, 5 points. Beyond the first five places all who weigh in will receive 6 points and anyone without fish will receive 10 points. 15 points will be recorded against any person who misses a match and the series winner will be the lowest points scorer from the best six of eight matches.

The eight matches will be fished on the River Stour at Canford except when conditions are considered unsafe for fishing and then the match will be switched to the still water venue. River fishers will join the still water match and points will be awarded in exactly the same way as if the match was on the river.

After the final match the river series champion will be the angler with the lowest number of points amassed from six matches. In the event of there being a tie on points, the winning angler will be the one with the greatest weight in the six matches.

A tankard will be presented to the river series champion. A free membership will be presented to the Supreme Champion who will be either the river series champion or the still water series champion with the lowest points overall.

Three non-point scoring club matches will be staged in November and December 2018.

Entry fees for each match will be £10 and a £2 pegging fee will apply.

SEPTEMBER 2018

Into October

The last quarter of the year and the leaves show their autumn colours before they fall and drift away on the breeze.  The air carries a chill to signal colder days ahead but still we hope for another settled warm spell before the November winds and rain are upon us.  Frosty nights ahead so it time to think about warmer clothing, maybe not thermals yet but an extra layer to keep out the cold.

Jim is waiting for a hospital appointment for reconstruction work and some essential repairs so  afterwards he expects to be out of action for about 3 months. We all hope the surgery goes well for him and he makes a full and speedy recovery.

In the meantime, Neil and Pete will be running the still water matches with Jim continuing to take bookings over the phone.

Sunday 9th September - Memorial Match

Todber Manor – Ash Lake, Homeground Lake and Hillview Lake

A total of 56 pegs were needed to host this event so all three lakes were in use when we remembered lost friends and Club members John Steel, Mick Maidment and Terry Hiscock who sadly passed away last year.  Some quiet time before the whistle gave everyone time to reflect on memories of them and the good times we shared.  Donations from the competitors were generous and rounded up by John Candy from Todber Manor raising the total to £300 for the Macmillan charity.

APRIL 2018

Annual General Meeting – 27 March 2018

The Annual General Meeting took place at the Royal British Legion, Corfe Mullen on Tuesday the 27th of March with a revised agenda aimed at both providing information and stimulating questions from members.  Looking around the room I was aware of how well the Match Section was represented and my thanks go to you all for this support.

Jim’s Match Section report was scheduled towards the end of the evening by this point the agenda was running late so he has less time to speak than he had hoped.  Trophies were duly presented then Jim thanked everyone for their help with the activities of the Section and for attending the matches throughout the year.

Orchard Lakes and Revels Fishery

The Club now has fishing at Orchard and Revels.  Up to five permits are available daily and members are required to show their Wimborne permit when booking-in.

To avoid disappointment for those wishing to fish the match lakes at either venue I suggest a phone call first.

Evening Series

This was a, ‘Points Match’ where points were awarded separately for carp and other species of fish, so the challenge was to secure a good weight of both.  One point for the heaviest bag two for the next and so forth, the winner being the one with the lowest number of points overall.  The results  show the total weight brought to the scales.

A sign the days are becoming longer is the arrival of the Evening Series.  Ten matches every Wednesday evening from 9th May and staged alternately on Packhorse and Edmondsham lakes.

MARCH 2018

Wednesday 14 March

River Stour at Canford

Ten members had booked in to fish the second and final match on the river for this the last day of the Season.  The river was carrying some floodwater and pushing through at a pace but still fishable. Whilst the wind was coming from the right quarter it became far too strong, gale force at times causing breaking waves on some of the more exposed stretches. Nevertheless, everyone caught fish and although the weights were down on the previous match there seemed to be interest in returning to the venue in the new Season when the River Points Matches resume in November.

Jim made an early decision to cancel the match on the strength of the weather forecast of snow.

As it turned out the forecast proved to be 100% correct, it was not a good day for travel or for fishing.

Ten members had booked in to fish the first match on the river for several years and without exception expressed a desire for another before the season ends.  Match fishing on this stretch of the Stour ended as catches fell year after year until the only fish that seemed to be present were minnows but it’s all change now with good numbers of most species showing.

It was one of those days when everything seemed to be perfect, there was a light upstream wind, the sky was overcast for most of the time and the river was fining down after rain that fell a few days earlier.  There was a good pull on the water that made the fish work hard to keep their station in the flow and once hooked and sideways on to the current they gave a good account of themselves.  In most swims, the fish were slow to start feeding but as the day progressed more fish were taken and as is often the case, the last hour of the match proved to be the most productive. Whilst roach, dace and minnows were present for everyone there were also some small chub caught and perhaps the most unusual catch of the day went to Hugh Miles who landed a sea trout.

Afterwards, several opinions were put forward as to why the fishing has improved so much recently but I remain open minded on the subject, save to say whatever is happening, I just hope it continues.

JUNE 2018

Spring into Summer

Both May and June have been warm and dry this year and whether driven by water temperature, or the longer days fishy seasonal activities have taken place recently on our lakes where carp have been thrashing about in the reed and lily beds.  In past times a close season enabled the fish to attend to their annual duties uninterrupted by anglers but the ban on fishing was lifted without it would seem any harm coming to the fish. Lifting the close season on our rivers is currently being considered by the EA and whilst some anglers are undecided on this issue, others are either lifters or retainers. Consultation is promised prior to a decision so hopefully this should not require a referendum.

Weekend Sweepstake Matches

Members will see that throughout the summer months most of our matches fall midweek to take advantage of the extended daylight hours and to allow members full use of the Club’s lakes at weekends.  Therefore, to fill the weekend void for some, Jim has arranged sweepstake matches on the Todber Manor complex.  Places are limited so contact Jim if you are interested.

Mick Maidment – His Last Cast – 17 May 2018

Close friends of the recently departed and much missed Mick Maidment gathered at Edmondsham Lakes to spread his ashes over his favorite swim and to share memories of him in the afternoon sunshine.  In Mick’s swim there now stands a plaque bearing a message as a permanent reminder of this great angler.

On September 9th there will be a memorial match at Todber Manor to remember friends from the match section who sadly are no longer with us this year.

Please touch in with Jim if you wish to attend.

AUGUST 2018

Turning the Corner towards Autumn

The blistering summer heat has now gone and at this time of the year we can look forward to the glorious spectacle of autumn colour that comes with the shortening days and colder nights.  Fish too respond to the fall in temperatures and in still waters we should expect them to be less active however in our rivers the opposite is the case as the weed dies back and rainfall increases, they become more interested in our baits. Ahead lies cooler temperatures, more wind and rain, possibly a frost and the chance of an Indian summer lasting well into October.

FEBRUARY 2018

A light hearted overview of some of the match fishing events that have taken place over the past month with the occasional photo, as well as  results, news items and general information about forthcoming matches.

A message from Jim Finch

Jim has asked me to thank everyone who turned out during January to support the points matches at Packhorse Lake.  Fishing at this time of the year can often be a challenge with only a handful of days that offer comfortable weather.  As we move into February the sun moves a little higher in the sky to signal Spring is on the way.  The days become longer and there is a feeling that he worst of the miserable weather has passed.

2nd P Christopher 69lbs

River Stour – Canford

From November last year I have been spending more time on the river than ever, and as I write my thoughts return to match fishing there in years past. The fishing this winter has been generally good with roach, dace and bleak eager to feed but there have been a couple of days when I have struggled for a bite, particularly when the water has been too coloured or the temperature too low.  I have had to contend with pike, otters, dogs, cormorants, model boats, kayaks and novice rowers who come crashing into the bank.  It all makes for an interesting day!

Mike Cullen is arranging a match at Canford on the 18th of February and so I just hope the conditions are right and it proves to be a successful day.

DECEMBER 2017

A light hearted overview of some of the match fishing events that have taken place over the past month with the occasional photo, as well as  results, news items and general information about forthcoming matches.

Christmas match 2017

Well done Jim and our thanks for everything you have done for the Club and the Match Section.

The ever helpful Neil Saxby reminds everyone where the lake is...

Sunday 3 December 2017 - Christmas Match

It was a pleasant enough day, dry with little wind but cold but some frosty nights had preceded so the fish seemed reluctant to respond to our baits.  However, several carp and were caught and these bonus fish helped fill the top spots.  Some backing weights followed, boosted by a decent perch, roach or bream but for most anglers it was a small fish day.

Result

1st M Jepson 12lb 8oz

2nd M Taylor 10lb 6oz

3rd N Saxby 8lb 12oz

4th S Mancey and P Christopher each with 8lb 4oz

A prize for the best Roach and this fish of 1lb fell to Mick Bartlett

Sunday 10 December 2017 – Club Points Match - Packhorse Lake

A bitterly cold, wet and windy day the effects of which was borne out by the result.  Fishing in such conditions is only for the dedicated match angler and all credit to those who turned out on such an awful winters day.

1st  M Taylor  5lbs

2nd N King  4lbs 4oz

3rd C Albiston  3lbs 4oz

NOVEMBER 2017

Witherington Farm

5 November

Stuart collects the scales.

Brian Preston disappears behind a mountain of tackle.

Jim adjusts his thermals.

1st N Saxby  27lb 0oz

2nd P Christopher 19lb 2oz

3rd B Heap  14lb 2oz

In the hour before the start of the match the sky was clear, the sun was up in the sky and the water looked perfect.  It was cold, a frost overnight gave that wintery feel and as the morning progressed the north wind picked up but save for a few specks of rain in the afternoon, it remained dry.

The fish seemed reluctant to feed and other than a sprinkling of large carp there were very few fish caught.

Since we last fished here, ropes had been strung across the lake to deter the cormorants.  It soon became evident that for some, these created a, ‘casting hazard’ so practice in the garden avoiding the washing line may be necessary.  Much to the amazement of everyone else, Jim decided to take his ropes down.

Sunday 5 November

Beaumont Cup – Lower Stour

Following their success last year, the Wimborne team finished overall winners of the competition.  Fished on the tidal reaches of the river, the team returned good points in their sections to retain the Cup again.  Well done!

Sunday 19 November

Witherington Farm

1st M Bartlett 21lbs

2nd  M Jepson 14lbs

3rd S Mancey 13lbs

Sunday 26 November

Packhorse Lake

1st M Bartlett 18lbs

2nd M Jepson 11lbs

3rd C Albiston 6lbs

After many years without a match on the River Stour Mike Cullen is actively trying to arrange a Sunday match on the river, this probably being staged on the Baileys section. He is contacting the University rowing club and Canford School to find the best dates and working with Jim to avoid a clash with existing matches so quite a challenge for him.

Contact Mike or Jim if you are interested in fishing.

Below is a photo of a roach I took at Baileys a couple of weeks ago.
