JUNE LAKES REPORT

Dear Fellow Trout Anglers

Firstly, a warm welcome to all new and returning members, great to have you on board and I hope you enjoy the fishing! Also welcome to anyone who hasn’t been on the circulation list before (I’m trying to get it up to date) for this note. If you want to come off the circulation list please email me - these notes do go on the website as well.

First a couple of housekeeping points, then the fishing!

Thank you very much everyone for sending me your catch returns by email. It is much appreciated (and necessary as the fishing huts must remain out of bounds due to the virus). I use them to keep an eye on fishing, especially to help judge when the lakes need restocking, so it’s good for all of us, so thank you.

Due to Coronavirus restrictions, we haven’t been able to hold our usual group work parties, so a few hard working individuals have been getting and keeping our trout fisheries in good shape for us all to enjoy our fishing, and I thank them very much. However, there are a couple of points that have come to my attention that I wanted to pass on. Firstly, the first jetty at Chapmans has had to have a temporary repair, so please be careful on that. Also, over the winter, the rabbits have dug some holes at Zelston and cattle got to the bankside at Chapmans and created some deep holes, so please watch out for them, we don’t want any twisted ankles or worse!

Finally, do please remember the hygiene and social distancing rules (they are on the website if needed) - we don’t want this virus!! You can still very much enjoy your fishing though.

So the Fishing

Winterbourne Zelston

The fishing has been superb since we were allowed to go fishing again. The trout are in absolutely tip top condition, fighting hard and eating extremely well. The average weight caught since we got back to fishing is 4lb 9oz and they are real tackle testers. There are still good numbers in Zelston, but they have wised up and are rather more wary, but still most members are getting their two fish each visit. Sight fishing might sort out the 5lb/6lb plus fish, but the average is a very good size anyway. The spring is still running and keeping the water level up, but it is slowing down. We are watching this closely, together with the weed growth, but all jettys remain good for fishing (for those not familiar with Zelston, the water level drops in the summer and the lake gets weeded up, preventing fishing until the autumn). So enjoy the fishing - you might catch a PB or just the most beautiful rainbow trout ever

Rawlsbury

Rawlsbury has been open for just over two weeks now. Again the fishing has been superb. We stocked with fabulous rainbows specially selected both for excellent eating and superb fighting qualities. All the reports to me have confirmed they live up to both qualities. We stocked at an average weight of 3lb 11oz and they’ve come out so far at an average weight of 3lb 12oz - a very good size indeed and they really do fight hard. For more information, see my note on Rawlsbury opening (below or on the website)

So, enjoy some excellent fishing in beautiful surroundings and keep the reports coming in to me. Also, please email me if you have any queries or questions and I’ll do what I can to help (including the password to buy tickets via the website - you don’t need a PayPal account, if you haven’t got one a credit card works too)
