JANUARY LAKES REPORT

Dear Fellow Trout Anglers

I am pleased to report we have now restocked Winterbourne Zelston, in accordance with our trout stocking policy. The lake is once again brim full of magnificent rainbow trout (as well as the brown trout from previous stockings). We have been able to maintain the superb quality and size of rainbow trout that we stocked at the end of October. Also we have once again been able to stock a few “trophy” sized fish, although you won’t be disappointed with the average size of fish generally. It is worth remembering that we are only able to stock this quality and quantity of fish with such a very reasonable price for a two fish ticket by operating a strict catch and keep policy for the rainbow trout. Hence the club rule prohibiting catch and release for the rainbow trout for all members and guests. There is no restriction on the number of tickets you may purchase in a day, however.

There are some very large trout in Zelston now, which, if hooked, will give you and your tackle a real test. Can I therefore advise fishing appropriate strength tippets. A 6lb tippet will have a 4lb breaking strain (approx) at the knots which might well prove inadequate against the bigger fish. In order to reduce the risk of losing a trophy fish (if I am lucky enough to hook one) and avoid fish being left with hooks in mouths and trailing tippet I fish a 9.5lb tippet which seems to work very well.

Dates for diaries:

The Game Section AGM is pencilled in for the evening of Tuesday, March 17th in Corfe Mullen. Confirmation will be sent out to all club members in the next newsletter. I very much hope to see as many of you there as possible to talk about tackle testing trout and also to review how the game section is doing, to look at the year ahead and to answer any questions you may have.

Rawlsbury is due to open on March 1st and we will restart our monthly work parties there in March. They are held on each second Tuesday of each month and volunteers are very welcome. No skills or experience are needed and we have jobs for all abilities. They are a fun, convivial few hours in lovely countryside and in the company of like minded people. Please contact me if you would like to come along.

I hope as many of you as possible find the time to fish Winterbourne Zelston. It really is a very high quality fishery at a very reasonable ticket price.
